Khablovskiy Lighthouse

Would you like to visit unconventional lighthouses in Ukraine? Then you should come to the Kherson region! There are more than twenty lighthouses in our region. Each one has a unique architectural design and history.

Project TripMustGoOn will tell you about one of three lighthouses in Khablovskiy. You’ll be surprised to learn that the tower is located not on the bank or coast but in the middle of the endless field on the border of Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.

There are two more names of the building: The Lighthouse in the Steppe and The Lighthouse in the Field.

History and particularities

Khablovskiy Lighthouse was built in 1866 and was located close to the hamlet of Khablov hence the name Khablovskiy. During World War II, the lighthouse was ruined and in 1952 the modern lighthouse was built.

The Lighthouse in the Steppe is from the Soviet Epoch with an inscription at the top that reads: The Gift of XIX congress of AUCP (b) (All-Union Communist Party bolsheviks (which existed from 1925 till 1952). The phrase is unique because it was the last Stalin congress of Bolsheviks. The following XX congress belongs to the epoch of de-Stalinisation.

Looking at the lonely and majestic tower in the middle of steppe field, the question arises: why is it built in the field? It is part of the process of navigation in the Dnipro-Bug estuary. There is a family of Khablovskiy lighthouses. The forward lighthouse is located in the middle of the Bug bay, the middle one is on the coastline, and the rearward one is far in the field. These navigation objects work together integrating their lights so a steersman can see the location and the course of the vessel.

Recently the tower has been repaired and the equipment has been upgraded. The exterior frontages were covered with the black metal coating, the vertical plate in the middle was left only. You must admit it is a very uncommon design for a lighthouse!

The tower works automatically. From time to time specialists come here to service the equipment. The rearward lighthouse beacons at night and in case of cloudy weather by day as well as the other navigation objects of the family.

You will be surprised but the tower has a secret: it can sing. When it is windy one can hear low-pitched and drawling sounds similar to the throat singing of Tuvinians.

Where is it located and the way to get there

The Lighthouse in the Field is situated close to the road between villages Oleksandrivka and Lupareve, not far from Stanislav. It is a borderline of two regions: Mykolaiiv and Kherson. For your information: there are no regular mass public routes to the place.

The lighthouse is situated in 60 km from Kherson. The drive will take 1.5 hour by car. You should go along road T1501. If you travel from Mykolaiiv it will take about 1 hour (40 km) to get to the lighthouse.

What to do on Khablovskiy Lighthouse

We are sure you will enjoy your visit as the locality is very picturesque! There is an endless field and over the horizon you can see a thin ribbon of the bay. The steppe is green even in winter!

What tourists can do here:

• walk along the field;
• take photos with the lighthouse in the background;
• arrange a romantic picnic;
• study the framework of the lighthouse;
• calmly stay alone with your thoughts.

If you are interested in tours to the lighthouses of Kherson regions, we have good news for you! Starting from June 2020 Adzhyholskyi and Genichesk coast lighthouses are open for tourists. You have to register beforehand to get there.
