Lighthouses of Ukraine are not only strategic and engineering navigation objects but also historical listed buildings. Architectural frameworks of Kherson land have always been attracting attention of tourists. Local lighthouses astonish with unique origin and unconventional design.

One of such objects is Henichesk Onshore Lighthouse. It is worthily considered the main symbol of the town. If you are going to spend vacation here, you are bound to visit the beacon. Further we are providing in-depth information about this historical building, its particularities and how it can be interesting to tourists.

History and particularities

Henichesk Onshore Lighthouse is a unique building which is anything but alike the other frameworks. You will face a white two-storeyed construction with windows opening on the sea. In the center of the facade there is a light square tower. It rises 25.4 m above the sea level.

Why is the framework so special? Most of lighthouses are washed by the sea; they are built round so that the constructions could withstand storms. The onshore lighthouse in Henichesk is located on the coastline that`s why the form of the tower was changed.

The construction was initiated by the famous meteorologist, historian, captain and hero of the Russian -Turkish War Ferdinand von Wrangell. The framework was designed by French architects. In 1879 the object was brought into operation. The event played a key role in the development of waterborne traffic of Henichesk: the port started its work, and the town began revitalizing.

Local residents show great honour to the onshore lighthouse. It is an ancient symbol of the town present on the most townscapes by Henichesk artists. Henichesk coat-of–arms also depicts outlines of the lighthouses. The tour to the place piques interest of history and architecture adherents.

Though the tower is more than 140 years, it still functions. For the time of existence the facade was repaired time and again, the windows and roof were renewed. But the inner elements are of that time. The iron-wrought fence of the spiral staircase and ventilation system catches the eye.
