The Northern (Moscow) Gates is a part of the historical fortress as well as one of the very first constructions in the city preserved to this day.
It is made of local limestone. Rodion Kazakov engineere the gate, which was completed in 1783. Catherine II entered Kherson through this gate in May 1787.
Another name for the gate is St. Petersburg Gates, according to the direction of roads leading from the fortress. Back then, the gate was equipped with a drawbridge, which connected the fortress with the outer military settlement.
Today this attraction is the main monument for guests of the city. After passing through the park, you will get to the St.Catherine Cathedral.
The gate is located on the territory of the Kherson State University (Universytetska Street), in the northeastern part of Kherson Fortress park.
