It is one of the best museums in southern Ukraine and the oldest attraction of the regional center. It was founded in 1890. The main exhibits were items and objects found by Viktor Hoshkevych, the famous archaeologist. The researcher conducted excavations in Kherson region. Later, the museum collection expanded at the account of findings of other scientists. In 1997, there were 70,000 copies of antiquities.
Today, Kherson Museum of Local Lore, History and Economy has 173000 unique finds. 10000 of them are presented in the exhibition halls. It is amazing that some exhibition objects date back to the seventh century BC. There are antique coins, treasures from the Scythian barrows as well as weapons and firearms of the 16th century.
Exhibitions
The museum contains four collections. Two collections are located at Soborna Str. 9:
- Ancient history. For tourists, there is a collection of antique coins, ancient amphora and clay tableware, bronze mirrors, stone objects, and finds, weapons of the 16th century.
- Modern history. Visitors can attend the exhibit dedicated to the establishment of the city and the political activities of Grigory Potemkin, Fyodor Ushakov and Alexander Suvorov. It’s also possible to examine the first sketches of the Kherson Fortress!
Science and Literature (located at Teatralna Str 1). It’s known as a house-museum named after Boris Lavrenov. Here, you can study unique samples of newspapers and magazines, handwritten materials, and personal belongings of Alexander Pushkin, Lev Tolstoy and Boris Lavrenev. Natural Science Museum (or Nature Museum, as locals call it) is located at Teatralna Str. 5. Nature lovers will be surprised by the rich variety of the plant and animal world. Here, tourists are invited to see rare and endangered species, such as the snow leopard and the Siberian tiger. A number of plant and animal species from the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea, the Dnipro Delta and the Estuary are also part of the collection. How to get there
The address is 9 Soborna Str. By minibus No. 35 from the railway station. From the bus station – by bus No.9, 10, 16, 20 to the "Rechport" bus stop.
